Change is complex. Our responses and reactions to change are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individual<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. For some, th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e new \u2018normal\u2019&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will feel&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very scary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;prospect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;indeed,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whereas,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">others,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;ready to embrace a new world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and may even feel energised by the opportunities this&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">presents<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Experiences and responses to change will vary enormously.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some members of staff&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have been furloughed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and therefore left with nothing to do, while&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">others&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will have remained in-situ but facing different challenges, different work patterns, double shifts&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and secondments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Everyone has faced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;uncertainty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">insecurity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instability.&nbsp; Our experiences&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and responses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will be very different.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From an organisational perspective this highlights a very real dilemma that organisations now face.&nbsp; How to cope with change, including its diversity and complexity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Challenges Organisations will Face&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From an organisational standpoint, notwithstanding the very&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real and immediate need to address staff wellbeing,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there is a growing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;imperative&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for damage limitation and efforts&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needed to minimise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the adverse&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;of change on performance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In order to do this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leaders will need&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to understand better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the combination of factors that influence performance amidst&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this&nbsp;ever&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">changing&nbsp;landscape.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In terms of our psychological understanding of change, this&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will involve a deeper&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">insight into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the compound effects of extrinsic and intrinsic components of change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp; Including<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, clarity around the actions to take&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;address this.&nbsp; So, what do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;mean&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and how should organisation prepare<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So How can Organisations Prepare for Change?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When we talk about the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;extrinsic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;components of&nbsp;change&nbsp;we refer to the practical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;realities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;that people face, changes to working conditions, patterns, relationships etc.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;When we refer to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the intrinsic components of&nbsp;change&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we mean the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;individual responses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;people have towards<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ow people react emotionally<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and how they internalise&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the effects of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">change. This involves&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">building&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">resilience and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;understanding&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to support&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">deal with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uncertainty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;of change effectively.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is where a deeper understanding of&nbsp;<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mindset<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;is essential. As a working definition, mindset is the collection of thoughts, attitudes and beliefs that we hold.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Often described&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;a&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fixed&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">growth<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;mindset. They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;are emotionally present rather than just physically present<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;help drive forward the implementation of new projects and changes the organisation needs to survive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
