That\u2019s not just good manners. That\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>At Co-Creation, we talk a lot about mindset, presence, and culture. But underpinning all of that is this: the moment someone chooses to spend time with you, they&#8217;re making an investment. Whether it&#8217;s a coaching session, a feedback conversation, or a walk-and-talk to untangle a messy challenge\u2014when someone gives you time, they&#8217;re saying, &#8220;You matter to me right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not transactional. My circle of friends has naturally got smaller. I\u2019m more selective (sorry, not sorry!) about who I spend my spare time with, and I now plan it more intentionally. My calendar has become a way of protecting space for the people who matter most to me.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, my Mum and I were visiting her sister\u2014my Auntie\u2014in Phoenix, Arizona. We were having a lovely lunch on a sunny terrace when my mobile vibrated on the table. <br \/>I glanced down, and up flashed a calendar notification: Phone Mum.<\/p>\n<p>My Mum (not too familiar with mobile tech) looked at me and said, \u201cWhy do you need to phone me? I\u2019m right here!\u201d Before I could mumble an answer, my Auntie burst out laughing and said, \u201cBusted! Annette has a reminder set to call you!\u201d<br \/>Mum looked a bit hurt at first, until I asked, \u201cDo you like it when I call you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded and said, \u201cYes, of course.\u201d<br \/>\u201cWell,\u201d I replied, \u201cif it wasn\u2019t in my calendar, Mum, it might never happen!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all laughed, but the truth is, it stuck with me. Not because I got caught out, but because it reminded me that even with people we love, our attention isn\u2019t guaranteed. <\/p>\n<p>We have to choose it. <br \/>Make room for it. <br \/>Protect it. <br \/>Honour it.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Finding Ownership in Change&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_2_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; header_2_font_size=&#8221;24px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||15px||false|false&#8221; border_style_all=&#8221;double&#8221; border_width_bottom=&#8221;1px&#8221; border_color_bottom=&#8221;#B3BBC8&#8243; border_style_bottom=&#8221;solid&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Presence Is a Choice, Not a Calendar Slot<\/h3>\n<p>As we all know, it\u2019s easy to show up physically but still be somewhere else entirely, scanning emails, half-listening, already onto the next thing. But when you <strong>really<\/strong> show up for someone, something shifts.<\/p>\n<p>They feel <strong>seen<\/strong>. They feel <strong>heard<\/strong>. They feel <strong>valued<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And as any leader knows, those feelings are the foundation of <strong>trust, performance, and belonging<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Being present doesn\u2019t require more hours in your day. It just asks that, when you\u2019re with someone, you\u2019re <strong>with<\/strong> them. They\u2019re the ones who made me and others, feel like we mattered.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what happens when you treat <strong>time<\/strong> as a <strong>gift<\/strong> rather than a <strong>given<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019re leading a team, here\u2019s something to try this week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Put away your phone<\/strong> during 1-2-1s or team conversations. Make eye contact. Let people know they have your full attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start or end meetings with a \u201cthank you for your time.\u201d<\/strong> It seems small, but it lands big, especially when it\u2019s sincere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Block time for people, not just tasks.<\/strong> Don\u2019t let your calendar only reflect outputs. Protect space for informal chats, thinking time or check-ins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be the one who initiates.<\/strong> Schedule a walk, a coffee, or a 10-minute Zoom to say, \u201cHow are you, really?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use micro-moments well.<\/strong> Even a quick WhatsApp message saying, \u201cI appreciated your input today\u201d can make someone feel valued.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create \u2018no meeting zones\u2019 or deep-focus hours<\/strong> for your team. Giving people time back is just as powerful as spending it with them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask a better opening question.<\/strong> Swap \u201cHow are you?\u201d for \u201cWhat\u2019s been energising you this week?\u201d and really listen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review who gets your time and why.<\/strong> Who are the people who leave you energised, challenged, inspired?<br \/>And who are the ones you <strong>keep<\/strong> giving your time to, even though it only ever leaves you <strong>drained?<\/strong> This isn\u2019t about being unkind. It\u2019s about being honest. If someone consistently brings only negatives and no growth, maybe it\u2019s time to gently but firmly reduce how much space they take up.<br \/>Your energy is finite. Use it wisely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These small, intentional actions create a ripple effect. Because when your team sees that you value their time and yours they start doing the same for each other.<\/p>\n<p>Presence spreads. You inspire them. You remind them that what they\u2019re saying, feeling or wrestling with matters.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s <strong>leadership in action<\/strong>. Not in a <strong>handbook<\/strong>, but in a <strong>heartfelt and authentic way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the bonus: when you lead this way, others follow. Time-given creates time-gifted in return. You shape a culture where generosity, curiosity and connection are part of the everyday rhythm. Out loud. With intention.<\/p>\n<p>Because the people who give us their time?
